December 2022 Mini Reviews

This felt like such a unique and refreshing read! I went in expecting a bit of a mystery, detective novel where a family goes to find one of their own, but There's Been a Little Incident ended up being so much more than that. Through attempting to track down Molly after her latest disappearance act, we get to experience each family member's lives, their own troubles as well as memories of Molly and her mother and the family dynamic as a whole, and I really enjoyed it. I normally get overwhelmed with books that have a lot of principal characters, but I loved how each of their stories seamlessly weaved together and getting to see times in which they come together as a family. I don't really think the drug dealer storyline was, but that's just because I was enjoying the rest of the story so much!

I thought the concept of this seemed so ridiculous that the book was bound to just be so much fun to read, and I was right! Runaway Groomsman had some different romance tropes compared to a lot that I've read lately, which was so refreshing. I really enjoyed the fact that they had met before and it started off as a mutual disinterest, before both changing their minds and really falling for each other. I also hadn't come across a romance where one of them is in a relationship at the time of meeting for a while, so that was interesting to read about. The banter between Sawyer and Fallon was honestly great and I loved how naturally it came for them even before they admitted to wanting to be friends, let alone anything more. The small-town setting and the secondary plotline of Fallon's grandpa and Sawyer's caring nature towards him just cemented this as a really solid romance for me!

The Wrong Bridesmaid by Lauren Landish

I went into this book completely blind, liking the sound of the premise but not having heard of Landish before, and I have to say this felt a bit underwhelming overall. The cover isn't what I normally go for with romances, and maybe I should've known it wouldn't necessarily be my cup of tea. It wasn't a bad book by any means, as I thought the writing was strong, but I didn't immediately warm to the romance between Hazel and Wyatt, the protagonists, like I normally do. I also found it quite hard to keep track of all the secondary characters, with the multiple siblings and bridesmaids and town members, which isn't something I usually struggle with, but it made me find it hard to really get into the story. I enjoyed the whole town rezoning drama more than the scenes surrounding the wedding, to be honest, and found the ending to that way more satisfying than how Hazel and Wyatt's story ended.

A Restless Truth by Freya Marske

I really enjoyed the first book in this series, A Marvellous Light, and I couldn't wait for this sequel to come out! I really warmed to Maud and Violet straight away, which I wasn't necessarily expecting, but I honestly found the two of them to be very well-suited. With the addition of Hawthorn, I loved the dynamic this little trio had going on, especially their resistance to show care for one another. The setting of the ship and the characters taking their journey across the Atlantic felt like the perfect backdrop for this story and the adventures that they all went on, all the nooks and crannies with mysteries lurking round the corners, and constant trouble for them all to get in. I'm a massive fan of a murder-mystery but this one especially worked for me in it being more situational. A bit slow at times, but another delight from Marske!
