A Power Unbound by Freya Marske
The Last Binding #3

What a great end to this trilogy! I'm really sad to see these characters go, but I think Marske portrayed a fitting ending for them, and I will definitely be keeping an eye out for whatever she writes next. I particularly enjoyed getting to meet Robin's sister Maud in the second book, A Restless Truth, and I was very excited to see her, and her partner Violet, return for this final installment. The group dynamics were so much fun to read, and while the overarching plotline of the Last Contract was at full force in this last book, I have to say I much preferred reading about everyone's interactions with one another, and the budding relationship between Jack and Alan. There were times where I got a bit confused, and when a lot of secondary characters were introduced I had to pay a lot of attention to remember who was related to who, but that didn't take away from my overall enjoyment and I was so glad to see a happy ending for everyone.

This was such a ridiculous book, but I ended up having fun with it! Although I haven't read Thorne's other works yet, it is clear that Angelika Frankenstein Makes Her Match is a severe departure from her more traditional romance novels, and I think it's great that she has a range of stories that she wants to tell, and she does so well. Reading this before Halloween felt perfect, and the huge manor setting within a tiny village added to the overall atmosphere of the book. I do think it takes fully absorbing yourself and embracing the absurdity of it all to enjoy the story, and once you can look past the fact that this is a very quirky concept, I do think it was an entertaining read. I enjoyed the sibling relationship in this, and the overall dynamic within the house, but I have to admit I found some aspects to be too far-fetched for my taste.

My Roommate Is a Vampire by Jenna Levine

I didn't have very high expectations for this, just because I was wary that it would feel a bit gimmicky, but I ended up actually really enjoying My Roommate Is a Vampire! It was fun, it wasn't too serious, but it was well-written and I genuinely enjoyed reading Cassie and Frederick interact with each other. I particularly enjoyed the 'education' Cassie gives Frederick in attempting to bring him up-to-date with the present-day and its current culture; it felt like the classic makeover scene in coming-of-age films and I love that! The characters weren't the most developed, but I'm hoping that Levine's next work, which follows a secondary character from this debut, will allow us to gain an insight into what Cassie and Frederick are up to in the future. I enjoyed the stereotypes and tropes from other vampire works being included in this, but with a modern twist too.

The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling
The Ex Hex #2
Published: 20th September 2022 by Headline Eternal

I can't believe I'm saying this but I actually think I enjoyed this more than The Ex Hex! I really didn't think that this would be the case, because I did really enjoy The Ex Hex, and while I found Gwen to be very fun as Vivi's cousin, she didn't particularly stand out to me as someone who I desperately needed to read more of, and yet I couldn't put this book down. I thought the chemistry between her and Llewellyn was great, and I always love an enemies-to-lovers trope. Everything from their rival shops to having to work together to fight this threat on the town just worked really well for me, and I think The Kiss Curse did massively benefit from the fact that the town and the way in which magic plays a part in it was already established in the first book, so that this sequel could focus more on jumping straight into the action. I have no idea if Sterling is planning on writing more books in this world, but I would love it if she did.
