Synopsis

An anxiety disorder disrupts fourteen-year-old Audrey’s daily life. She has been making slow but steady progress with Dr. Sarah, but when Audrey meets Linus, her brother’s gaming teammate, she is energized. She connects with him. Audrey can talk through her fears with Linus in a way she’s never been able to do with anyone before. As their friendship deepens and her recovery gains momentum, a sweet romantic connection develops, one that helps not just Audrey but also her entire family.

My review

This book received a lot of attention around the time of its release, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I was a bit wary of this book going in to it as it deals with an important subject matter, and I didn't know how it was going to be portrayed, but I was so pleased with the end result. Sophie Kinsella has a great understanding of what it is like to live with anxiety, and that comes across in the book well. However, she also makes a point of showing that it doesn't have to consume every second of every day, and that people who have anxiety can have fun, and have relationships and live a normal life too.

Part of me was surprised by how light-hearted this book was, but I think that was a wise move that Kinsella made. This is Sophie Kinsella's Young Adult debut, and I thought it was great, which just goes to show that she can transfer her writing from adult to YA.

Family was a massive part of this book, and that is something that I really enjoy reading about. They were hilarious, and I just loved the dynamic of the family.

The main thing that I enjoyed about Finding Audrey is how Linus doesn't try and save Audrey, and that by magically being there for her will make her anxiety go away. A lot of reviews that I've read felt like that was the case, but I disagree.

I really enjoyed this book, and if Sophie ever writes more YA, I will certainly check it out!

January 2024 Mini Reviews - part 3

Real Easy   by Marie Rutkoski Published: 18th January 2022 by Tinder Press I received a copy of this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley. This in no way affects my review. This felt like a real departure from what Rutkoski is known for writing - the popular YA Fantasy series The Winner's Trilogy  - but this venture into Adult Fiction was gripping, and shows her range throughout ages and genres. I feel as though the whole "strippers being murdered" storyline is one that can be done badly very easily, but Rutkoski puts the stories of the strippers at the forefront of the novel, allowing their lives the be the focus, and ultimately the heart of the story, rather than the killer or the detectives investigating the crimes. The sisterhood borne out of circumstance seen between the women in Real Easy , including the female detective, felt very authentic, in loving but not necessarily liking one another, but always protecting their kin.
